Thoughtful, remorse filled eyes stared at a folded letter, gently held with great care by a pale skinned hand with slender fingers. The moon seemed to be tucked under a blanket of clouds, as if it too were turning in for the night. However, it was still many hours before dawn, and as the vampire set the note on a table, his chest heaved ever so lightly as the male sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. It was probably one of the hardest things for him to do, leaving his beloved in this manner, but it couldn’t be helped. He knew she would argue with him and try to keep him from going. An affectionate smile creased his pale lips, and Adrias Brandt took one last look at his lover, imprinting her face onto his memory so he would never forget her.
Times were hard, and he knew he just complicated matters by staying. He was an outsider in these lands, a foreigner. Adrias had been wrong to have captured the heart of this woman in particular. He was no help to her in her struggles, Adrias knew that already. Silently walking over to the bed where she laid, fast asleep, he bent over, placing one, last, sweet kiss on her lips. After that was done, he turned away and left the chamber, and eventually, the Cove of Misery itself, traveling off to who knew where. But for the time being, he knew that he could not stay here.
The letter he had left, read:
To my Dearly Beloved,
By the time you wake up and read this, chances are that I’ve already left the country. I know that this may come to be a surprise to you, but please, I encourage you to read on and try to understand what has caused this situation to come to life.
It seems like it was only yesterday, that I had first met you back at the Cave, and I can still smell the fresh scent of roses growing on the ledge past the balcony we occupied that night. Just like always, you were a stunning beauty, but I dared not test my boundaries back then, for fear of a very painful retribution. However, I am glad, when I look back upon it now, that I did make the effort to distract you from the turmoil of the current time, and help you see the beauty in life that is around us… I see now, that love can blossom no matter where, or what the circumstances. And for that night, I have no regrets.
You were always quite the rose yourself, my precious angel. Stunning, gorgeous, and quite desirable. And like every rose, you had your thorns as well. However, that never did diminish my affections towards you. If anything, it has strengthened my feelings for you. I know that I wasn’t always the best option for your King, and unfortunately things took a turn for the worse with the war coming up. You probably do not know, but early on in my adventures here, the first race I encountered were the lycans.
Now I can safely and confidently say that not all of them are bad, but I believe that you think otherwise. But moving along¸ in return for Lady Syrenia’s kindness at the time, I made her a promise not to act in violence against her kind. It was a silent vow I have kept ever since its creation, and I do not wish to tarnish a pact with someone I would have called friend had we met on different circumstances. However, that is not the only reason why I had left at such a critical time. Your people require a strong leader, and I’m afraid I cannot fulfill their expectations at this current time. I would rather not see them dethrone you, and for your future in mind, I have left quietly, and without notice. I’m well aware that you can suppress dissent through force, but that would lead to problems when the fighting starts, wouldn’t it?
So with your best interests taking priority, I cannot allow myself to stay. It would put you, your daughters, and your people at terrible risks. And I could never forgive myself should something happen to either of you. It is with a heavy heart that I say please move on in life, and we both know that would be the better option at this juncture. I am not sure if I will return to these lands again, but where ever I go, do not doubt me when I say that you will always be in my thoughts, and in my heart. What we had together was wonderful, and I am happy to have spent that time with you, Keera. But now is not the time for a leader to relax. If I do return, I’d rather see you still alive, and bitter towards me, then seeing your name on a tombstone.
Please forgive me. I will always love you, Keera, no matter what happens to either of us. And although time may change who I may become, it cannot change who I am, or who I love. Best of luck to you Keera. May our paths cross again in the future.
